Flexible Instruction Days

Avella Area School District:  Flexible Instructional Day (FID)

Guidelines for Avella Parents/Guardians/Students

Updated 2/5/2021

Avella Area will be utilizing Flexible Instruction Days (FIDs) which may be used in place of a school day that would be canceled due to inclement weather or another emergency situation. On a Flexible Instruction Day (FID), students will complete learning activities and assignments provided by their teachers at home.

The District can use up to five(5) FIDs per school year.  FIDs are considered a school day and will not require additional make-up days when school is canceled. If school is canceled and not designated a FID the district will need to make up the days.

If the District calls for a FID, how will I know?

Students and parents/guardians will be notified of a FID through the district notification system in the same way that school closings and delays are announced.  Notifications will also appear on the Avella social media pages (Twitter: @AvellaArea and Facebook: @AvellaSD).

What will be expected of my child during a FID (grades 7-12)?

Students in grades 7 - 12 are expected to log on to Google Classroom to access class assignment information. Students have already been given membership to the Google Classroom for each of their teachers. All assignments will be available no later than 9:00 am. Students will have three (3) school days, once school resumes, to complete their class assignments. Any student who fails to complete their FID assignment within three (3) days will be marked absent unexcused from school and will receive a zero on any graded assignment that was not submitted.

What will be expected of my child during a FID (grades K-6)?

Elementary students will work on a FID packet created by their teachers.  The packet will include assignments for students to complete.  These assignments will include core and special area classes. Students will have three (3) school days, once school resumes, to complete their class assignments. Any student who fails to complete their FID assignment within three (3) days will be marked absent unexcused from school and will receive a zero on any graded assignment that was not submitted.  Please keep FID folders at home and readily available for any upcoming school cancellations.  Each packet will be marked according to the exact day.  For example, “FID #1” or “FID #2”.

How does student attendance work?

Student attendance will be determined by the completion of the FID lessons and/or assignment.

How can I contact a teacher or staff member during a FID?

All teachers and staff members will be available via email or Google Meet during a FID.  This includes administrators, secretaries, special education teachers, the school nurse, school counselors and special area teachers, unless the teacher or staff member is ill that day.

What if my child needs help with a lesson/assignment on a FID, will teachers be available to answer questions?

All school based staff members will be available to answer questions or provide lesson assistance on a FID via email or Google Meet during the hours below.  The technology director, Mr. Greg Wargo, will also be available at wargog@avellasd.org.

  • High School: 7:30 am to 3:00 pm (All assignments/lessons on Google Classroom will

be available no later than 9:00 am.)
